The screen bows, creosote builds behind it, and airflow drops. We don’t just bend it back - we replace the mesh with 304 stainless in a heavier gauge and add an interior support rib that Gelco’s original design lacks.
• Crown wash failure on Gelco-equipped flues. This isn’t the cap’s fault, but it’s the symptom owners notice first: a Gelco cap sits on a crown that’s been sloped wrong or poured without a drip edge. Water runs under the cap flange and saturates the crown. In Crystal Lake, we see this most on 1980s and 1990s construction where the original builder used a dry mix with no acrylic fortifier. We remove the cap, grind the crown to a proper 2-inch overhang with a drip groove, repour with S-type mortar and acrylic bonding agent, then reinstall the cap with new base seal.
